ADAMH E-Newsletter
The ADAMH System Grants Network has been meeting bi-monthly to address issues of interest to those seeking grant funding for ADAMH system agencies. Anyone in your organization with such responsibilities is welcome to join us. We have addressed topics such as SAMHSA program changes, capacity building grants, organizational priorities and had presenters from ODADAS and Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS). Agencies hosting our meetings have shared information on their programs and offered tours of their facilities. These meetings have provided networking opportunities and opened dialogue among our agencies. Please consider joining us at our May 19 meeting.

This quarterly newsletter is intended to keep you current on the grant seeking activities at the ADAMH Board, share future opportunities for partnering, and help you in your own efforts to seek grant funding for your organizations. The newsletter is sent to all provider Executive Directors and grants managers. Please contact Elaine Newman at enewman@adamh.co.franklin.oh.us or 222-3726 to make additions to the distribution list.

SAMHSA Seeking Grant Proposal Reviewers

The three centers of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) are seeking professionals to evaluate applications for Federal grants. Applications will be accepted at any time. However, if you wish to be considered for the FY 2004 grant cycle, applications must be received by June 30, 2004. Persons who have previously served as SAMHSA grant reviewers do not need to resubmit. This is a great way to learn about the grant process at one of the most significant funders of mental health and substance abuse treatment and prevention services. For more information, visit their website at www.samhsa.gov/grants/index.html.

Grantseeking Tips
The ADAMH System Grants Network discussed Capacity Building Grants at our March meeting. Here are a few points from that discussion:

Capacity Building Activities are those that:
  1. Strengthen an organization's ability to fulfill its mission
  2. Develop or refine skills, strategies, organizational systems and structures
  3. Promote capable leaders, sound management, and strong governance
  4. Help grantees clarify strategic and organizational challenges and structures
  5. Increase organization's sustainability and effectiveness
"Foundations that support capacity building want to make good operations better, not salvage pet projects or rehabilitate bad management" (S. Chandler, Writing Proposals for Capacity Building). They are not interested in rescuing a sinking ship. Most funders reserve capacity building grants for organizations with which they already have a relationship. Funders are interested in capacity building because it affords an opportunity to leverage resources. If they help to improve an organization's systems and operations, they increase that organization's ability to provide services to the client - the ultimate goal.
