ADAMH E-Newsletter
One of the strategic results of the ADAMH 2003 Strategic Business Plan addresses the need to supplement ADAMH's tax-supported budget from private funding sources. In response to that goal, ADAMH has developed a grantseeking program to provide enhanced revenues to fund strategic priorities and innovations to care for consumers so that they can experience recovery from mental illness and addictions.

This monthly newsletter will allow us to keep you current on the grantseeking activities at the ADAMH Board, share future opportunities for partnering, and help you in your own efforts to seek grant funding for your organizations. The newsletter will be sent to all provider Executive Directors. Please contact Elaine Newman at enewman@adamh.co.franklin.oh.us or 222-3726 to make additions to the distribution list.

Grantseeking Tips
Writing a Needs Statement
The first thing your proposal must do is convince the reader that a very real need exists and that it must be addressed. Some tips on developing a convincing Need Statement come from Julie Seewald Bornhoeft in an article on the Charity Channel Web site, December 10, 2002.
She recommends these key strategies:
  1. Develop a System for Maintaining Information - community demographics, local needs assessments, socioeconomic conditions
  2. Update Statistics and Figures Regularly - more than three years old is too old
  3. Use National Statistics as a Lead for Local Figures - convey need on the most local level possible
  4. Cite Your Sources
  5. Your Constituents Have Needs, Not Your Agency - present information in terms of those experiencing the problem
  6. Let Your Clients Speak - use quotes and testimonials
  7. Constantly Seek Opportunities to Identify and Substantiate Needs - waiting lists, increases in service demand, etc.
  8. Find Balance Between Reality and Sensationalism - elicit emotion, but it mustn't read like a tabloid
"Your Needs Statement lays the foundation for the rest of the proposal…must succeed in capturing the attention of the reviewer…create a response to funder need that is compelling, accurate and balanced."
