ADAMH E-Newsletter
One of the strategic results of the ADAMH 2003 Strategic Business Plan addresses the need to supplement its tax-supported budget from private funding sources. In response to that goal, ADAMH has developed a grantseeking program to provide enhanced revenues to create additional behavioral health care services for consumers so that they can experience recovery from mental illness and addictions.

This monthly newsletter will allow us to keep you current on the grantseeking activities at the ADAMH Board, share future opportunities for partnering, and help you in your own efforts to seek grant funding for your organizations. The newsletter will be sent to all provider Executive Directors and any other interested provider staff person. Please contact Elaine Newman at enewman@adamh.co.franklin.oh.us or 222-3726 to make additions to the distribution list.

Grantseeking Tips
Cultural competence is a critical component of most grant programs. Reviewers assess this concept very carefully in many applications, even if the RFP does not include a specific review criterion for cultural competence. Applications should demonstrate cultural competency throughout the program plan, rather than treating it as an "add on" to be addressed in a specific section of the grant application. The following guidelines may help ensure appropriate attention to cultural competence in your application:
  • Organization should have experience or track record of involvement with the target population.
  • Staff qualifications should reflect the composition of the target population.
  • Representatives of targeted population should be actively involved as participants throughout the program design.
  • Study design / service approach should demonstrate cultural competence.
  • Language and communication must be appropriate for the target population / community.
  • Evaluation, screening / assessment tools and survey should be appropriate to the population / community being served.

Grants Network
In the next few months, I will be convening regular meetings of an ADAMH System Grants Network, inviting representatives from provider agencies that have grantseeking and proposal writing responsibilities. We will address issues of interest and relevance to the participants. Please let me know who in your agency should be invited to these meetings.
