Drinking and driving puts us all at risk, whether we are in that car or simply a nearby traveler. Teenage drivers, even those who have had their driver’s license for a few years, are novices at this complex task and at increased risk for being in an accident. Furthermore, research indicates adolescent brains are still developing, particularly in areas regulating judgment, and impulse control. For teens especially, substance use can turn the challenging task of driving safely into a disaster for anyone sharing the road.
Parents have asked PERC (Parents Encouraging Responsible Choices) to provide information and insight about Dublin teens who are either driving under the influence or riding with an impaired driver and what this means to all of us.
• DUI is very common! In the past year, nearly half (43%) of youth who drive have been involved in driving under the influence (DUI), either as a driver or a rider. *
• Most kids who report sometimes being a “designated driver” are involved DUI at other times as a driver (36%) and/or passenger (47%). *
With assistance from OSU researchers, Dr. GeorgiAnn Diniaco, Andy Zweizig and Laura Leach, the Dublin City School’s Safe & Drug-free Schools counselors, will share findings and then facilitate discussion about changing this dangerous behavior. Please plan to join us and invite a friend. Learn more at the new PERC website: www.PERCdublin.org.
