Dr. Nancy Beran, a member of the Board of Directors at ADAMH-funded Huckleberry House, was honored with the Grace Kindig “Volunteerism” Award at the ADAMH Board of Trustees Meeting on Tuesday, April 22, 2008.
Dr. Beran, a sociology professor at Ohio Dominican University, has volunteered her time and efforts for more than 20 years in order to help those suffering from mental illnesses. In addition to her recruiting and fundraising efforts at the Huckleberry House, Dr. Beran has spent countless hours assisting patients at the Twin Valley Behavioral Health hospital.
Dr. Beran is admired for her caring and committed attitude toward those in need, and has been educating students about mental health, mental illnesses, stereotypes for more than 30 years.
Dr. Michel Coconis, Dr. Beran’s nominator and one of her many former students, said, “Sometimes ‘significant impact’ is felt in small increments by many people over time…that is the case for the volunteer work of Dr. Nancy Beran - small, incremental steps for big individual rewards.”
