Importance of Hobbies

Jan 22, 2008

If your kids are busy after school at dance class, soccer practice, rock collecting or any other hobby or interest they find engaging, they won’t have time to hang with the kids who have nothing better to do than experiment with drugs, gangs, alcohol or whatever else could get them into serious trouble.

Show interest in your child’s hobby. It demonstrates how you believe in them and that you understand how your child values it and its importance in their life.

Having a mutual hobby with your child could create a special bond.

Participating in leisure activities contributes to your physical and mental health and overall life satisfaction. You’re healthier, happier and more cheerful. You enjoy life more.

When asked what anti-drug efforts work, American children point to family ties, sports and hobbies (such as music and dancing) as their personal “anti-drugs.”

Having a hobby adds balance to your life. Making time for hobbies and favorite projects helps you value yourself.

Researchers tell us that hobbies can strengthen the body as well as the mind. Older people who keep busy at enjoyable activities live longer, happier and healthier lives.

Hobbies are fun, and having fun can help reduce stress in your life.

Adults with hobbies that exercise their brains — such as reading, jigsaw puzzles or chess — are 2.50 times less likely to have Alzheimer\'s disease, while leisure limited to TV watching may increase the risk, a study says.
